Dr. Update

Last night Jeff was inspired by some recent pictures of his cousin Leah's adorable baby Brynnlee and thought it would be a good idea to let Johanna spend some naked time by the fire. She seemed to love it so much we are going to try it more often. The poor thing is trapped inside her diaper 24/7 it must feel great for her to wiggle in her birthday suit! And what is cuter than a naked baby butt?

Today we went to visit her Dr. for a follow up from her VCUG at the Children's Hospital last week. Johanna has a grade II vesicoureteral reflux on her right side. They are graded on a scale from I to V, so luckily she is favored to recover with out any intervention. She has been on a low dose of amoxacillin since Saturday to prevent another UTI from occurring and seems to be taking it well. She will continue taking this antibiotic for thirty days then we will switch to another antibiotic to prevent her from forming a resistance. Our Doctor did some research and found that 39% will outgrow this within the first year, 62% the second, and 74% the third. Obviously we will be praying for the first. He also suggested we see a Urologist for a second opinion. My Doctor has not had very much experience with this condition, and Johanna was his youngest patient yet to have it! For this I am thankful, it is fortunate we have caught it now to prevent her going years with untreated UTI's. I will be scheduling her appointment tomorrow for next week to ensure Jeff will be able to make it. (He may start traveling for work soon, but that is a different post in itself!) Although I do not like the idea of her being on an antibiotic for an extended period of time, I would hate to risk another infection. Untreated urinary tract infections can lead to scarring in your kidneys. This scarring then leads to hypertension and other heart conditions later in life. So for now I will continue giving Miss Johanna her bubble gum snack- that's what it smells like to me, and hope for the best outcome that she outgrows this by next year!

  2. The pictures are too cute! I will have to continue the trend and get Nathan's naked butt posted soon. Thanks for the update on Johanna. I've been wondering about her. I'm so glad that you all are able to stay on top of it and she'll be just fine in no time :)

  3. I am almost 100%, that she will outgrow it. I read alot about it years ago and when infants and children have this problem it will fix itself. It is when we women are older and have this problem that surgery is required. The bummer is the antibiotic. Too bad after all this time they can't come up with a natural remedy.
I love the nakey baby photos, so cute!!!
