Having two under two is asking for an occasional bad day or two. One of the biggest hurdles is trying to keep them healthy. We all know toddlers are breeding grounds for germs so it is almost impossible to prevent the tiny ones from catching the bug no matter how much you breastfeed, wash hands and quarantine hence JJ being sick. Johanna has been battling a congested nose for weeks. The day of her big flower girl debut she woke up with black circles under her eyes and she complained of her eyes hurting. The following day they turned into scabs then the following day her eyes were completely crusted shut. Now I should preface this story with last week for JJ's 4 month appointment at his new doctor I showed up to the office literally TWO days early, I know I'm losing my mind. Fast forward to Monday. Wanting to avoid the Doctor at all costs I held off to see if things were better. Well of course they weren't so I had to call our new pediatrician yet again to schedule an appointment. We set the time for 11:50 and Jeff agreed to meet us on his lunch break. Well sometime between the 8 am conversation and 11:35 I decided the appointment was at 12:50 and had put Johanna down for an early nap. At 11:40 my phone rings and its Jeff. Me: Hello? Jeff: I'm pulling off the highway, are you there? Me: Huh? Jeff: The appointment?? Me: ...registering...Crap! The next 2 minutes were a whirlwind of me running into Johanna's room like a chicken with its head cut off grabbing her from her crib and throwing her into her car seat then dashing into the living room to snag JJ from the jumparoo. It was literally the fastest getaway in the history of all motherhood I am willing to bet. I zoomed through my neighborhood without my seat belt even being fastened at a brisk speed of 35mph (no I do not condone fast neighborhood driving but I was in a state of panic...) I zoomed right past who do you know a COP which is ironic since I can literally count on my hand the number of times I've seen cops in our neighborhood in the 3.5 years we've lived here. This particular officer must have caught a glimpse of my crazed and frantic face because miraculously he did not follow me! I pulled into the driveway at 11:56 and had Johanna in the office at 11:58. Of course as she is being carried down the hallway in Jeff's arms she begins to register where she is and the screaming begins. I'm carrying JJ in his car seat while rummaging through my purse to find our insurance cards which of course turns out I'd left at home. The whole time I'm thinking oh geeze....we start a new pediatrician, I show up two days early to the first appointment and late to our second with a crazed screaming kid, they're going to think we didn't chose to leave our last pediatrician he kicked us out! Luckily the Dr. was so super nice and surprisingly Johanna did better. I'm not going to say she did great but with Jeff there to hold her, a new setting and a woman Doctor she only cried for about half the visit and I'm proud to say I was able to leave with my hearing still intact.
I had promised Johanna a treat after her appointment so we got to make a special trip for a chocolate dipped ice-cream cone. Bribery? Maybe. Effective? We will see.
So now I've got two kids on antibiotics and it isn't even fall yet... oh boy! This was Johanna's first time ever having an actual infection worthy of an antibiotic and she is doing great. I knew we'd be fine considering the medicine is pink.
I may have bad days here and there but moments like these make it all worth it in the end. I love my babies!
Oh dear! I'm having so many flash backs from pieces of this story. Hope they are both feeling better soon!
